Important results from the project
Yes, the goals were met. The collaboration platform was established, a clinical pilot delivered a working AI model, and knowledge was disseminated via report and podcasts. In addition, the cooperation between the regions and the sharing of knowledge about each other´s AI platforms were deepened, and the project provided new international contacts (CIFAR, SickKids), a Vitalis track, media coverage, and a joint ESF project application with all seven university hospital regions and AI Sweden.
Expected long term effects
The project strengthens the ability of Swedish healthcare to move from AI pilot to clinical operation and deepens cooperation between the regions in a common cooperation platform for more projects. Region Skånes model and infrastructure can be reused for fewer missed visits. The biggest impact is the ESF proposal for Health AI Academy Sweden with all seven university hospitals and AI Sweden, which scales the cooperation nationally and ensures long-term competence supply.
Approach and implementation
The project was coordinated by AI Sweden and operationalized in five work packages: project management, AI leadership/strategy (leadership forum), data scientist network (roundtable, hackathon, exchange), clinical pilot in Region Skåne (missed appointments) and long-term funding. The work was carried out in close collaboration between Karolinska, Sahlgrenska, SUS and Unity Health Toronto, with a steering and project group and regular meetings.
