Purpose and goal

The project´s objective was to study and demonstrate a solution for securely sharing traffic-critical information between the connected vehicles of different vehicle operators, coordinated via a central cloud platform. This has been achieved by using and completing the AD Aware Traffic Control platform. Support has been added for enhanced data collection and coordinated traffic management using information sharing based on standardized interfaces and formats.

Expected results and effects

The project has shown the benefit of using a cloud-based central management system to exchange strategic information between connected vehicles. This also shows how data sharing between the parties together with a coordinated traffic management provides both safer driving of self-driving vehicles and better support for drivers in vehicles with advanced driver support. A traffic environment where connected and self-driving vehicles interact, are monitored and guided by a central traffic management has great potential to save both human life, money and the environment.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been integrated into the existing AD Aware Traffic Control traffic management system and its established infrastructure in the Drive Sweden’s Innovation Cloud. The parties have worked together to provide the traffic management system with the required data from the vehicle fleets. The collaboration includes sharing information to and from the traffic management system, primarily in the form of recommendations and advice regarding paths or areas and road segments that should be avoided. The services have been integrated into the AD / ADAS functions of the vehicles.
