Important results from the project
Our goal was to develop an environmentally friendly and safe process that allows deposition of a chrome coating for wear and corrosion protection of surfaces on materials used for moulding and machinery tools. We evaluated Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), which is more environmentally friendly than the current electroplating methods.
Expected long term effects
Within this project we did not reach our goals in terms of finding the solution of a replacement coating for hard chrome, but we have developed a deeper understanding towards the potential solution. We see that further development is require in order to find a replacement coating for Hard Chrome.
Approach and implementation
Our consortium was consisted of the company CemeCon that developed and fabricated the coatings, Aalborg University that analyzed the coatings and study the materials properties and finally two companies (end-users), Husqvarna and Gebr. Potthast, that tested and documented the performance of the coating. We think that the constellation set-up was good for the project task, but we realize that the task at hand was more difficult than we had foreseen, and we believe that more efforts are needed in order to solve the project task of finding are replacement coating for Hard Chrome.
