Purpose and goal
The thesis aims to evaluate whether battery energy storage (BESS) can replace diesel generators as backup power in data centers. The focus is on environmental impact, costs, reliability, size and the ability to deliver support services. The goal is to analyze and simulate different solutions, develop a comparison tool and conduct case studies and a comprehensive life cycle analysis.
Expected effects and result
The thesis is expected to demonstrate how BESS can reduce emissions, costs and space requirements compared to diesel, and provide better responsiveness and reliability for 6G edge nodes. The results include case studies, a comparative analysis and a decision support that helps data centers implement more sustainable and resilient backup power solutions.
Planned approach and implementation
The thesis is carried out via a site visit to RISE Datacentersystem, a literature study, development and simulation of the BESS concept, creation of a decision-making tool for cost, environmental impact and footprint, an overall life cycle analysis and three case studies, followed by a conference contribution and final report.
