Strong Swedish participation in new European effort on raw materials

Swedish organisations are involved in 129 of the 314 proposals submitted to the first international call for proposals under the EU partnership RAMP – Raw Materials Partnership for the Green and Digital Transition. Of these, 56 are coordinated by Swedish organisations. The proposed research- and innovation projects aim to contribute to a more secure and sustainable supply and efficient use of raw materials in Europe.

A total of 314 proposals has been received, with participants from 26 partner countries and 903 organisations. Nine other countries are represented by self-funded partners. 

The call for proposals is the first within RAMP, Raw Materials Partnership for the Green and Digital Transition, coordinated by Vinnova. The Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Research Council also participate in the partnership. Before the call for proposals, Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Research Council have worked together to prepare and support Swedish actors. 

Ahead of the next RAMP call, activities are also underway to support Swedish and Nordic organisations with building consortia and developing competitive proposals. Vinnova has, for example, organised a national webinar, while Nordic organisations can apply for funding through NordForsk to build partnerships and develop joint project ideas.

Broad involvement of Swedish organisations

In total, 68 Swedish organisations are involved in the proposals. Among them are:

  • 21 universities
  • 32 companies, of which 15 are large and 17 small or medium-sized
  • 10 research organisations

Companies are part of a quarter of the proposals.with Swedish involvement.

The avarage submitted comprises  six organisations from four countries. Swedish organisations tend to cooperate with organisations from Germany, Norway, Finland and Spain.

129 proposals seek Swedish funding

Of 129 proposals with Swedish involvement 108 funding from Vinnova and the Swedish Energy Agency.  Of the applications that are seeking funding from Vinnova, 46 are have a Swedish coordinator. 41% of all proposals include at least one Swedish organisations.

On average, the proposed projects plan to progress the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 2 to 5. Almost all projects are planned to run for 3 years.

Background

RAMP is a long-term international effort for enabling research and innovation on raw materials. The partnership brings together more than 50 organisations from over 30 countries and has a budget of around 350 million euros, of which 90 million have been committed from the EU.

RAMP plans to launch seven international calls for proposals until 2032. The initiative covers the entire raw material chain, from exploration and extraction to use, reuse and recycling.

Proposals are now undergoing an eligibility checks, which will be followed byby international experts. In mid-December, applicant will be informed abput which projects will move on to the next step.

Shortlisted projects may submit a complete proposal by 15 February 2027. Final decisions about project funding will be made following another round review and assessment.
