New business models and solutions for battery use will accelerate electrification
Vinnova is making a multi-year effort on research and innovation that will contribute to a sustainable and competitive Swedish battery industry. There is now a call for proposals within the initiative to develop business models and solutions where batteries are used, with potential to accelerate electrification and fossil-free transition.
The call for proposals is about developing business models and solutions for battery applications such as vehicles, work machines and energy storage.
Business model innovation, which is one focus of the call for proposals, refers to the development of how companies create, deliver and capture value. For example, through changed revenue models, customer relationships or collaborations with partners.
– It could be subscription solutions for energy storage or offering system solutions for electrified transportation as a service. These are just a couple of examples, says Carl Ridder, who works with the call for proposals at Vinnova.
To develop business models that work in reality and can be scaled up, projects need to collaborate with potential customers and business partners.
Solutions for battery applications
The development of solutions is intended to take place through the integration of existing technology for batteries, components and subsystems that are built on with software and services.
It is an advantage if the actors who will run the projects have completed much of the technical development work.
– This the call for proposals is a complement to technology-driven initiatives. The goal is to drive development from the laboratory towards practical solutions and scalable business models, says Carl Ridder.
The projects will result in solutions and business models with potential to accelerate electrification and fossil-free transition.
Strengthen Sweden's position in the battery race
The call for proposals is part of a multi-year effort on research and innovation that will contribute to a sustainable and competitive Swedish battery industry. The goal is to scale up and introduce technology and solutions along the entire value chain – from raw materials, production and use to recycling and reuse. The initiative is based on a mandate from the government, where companies, universities and public actors will collaborate.
The initiative began in 2025 with funding of project for the further development and scaling up of solutions that can contribute to a sustainable battery value chain.
