The mine of the future - system change in interaction between business and innovation policy

Vinnova, Mäster Samuelsgatan 56, Stockholm eller digitalt Tue 24 Jan 2023 at 07:45-09:30

The mining industry is in the midst of a thorough transformation through digitalisation, automation and electrification of the business. The development is driven by the pursuit of CO2 efficiency, a strong work environment focus and the need for increased productivity. At the center is of course the mining industry itself, but the mine has also become a testing ground for technical and infrastructural solutions that will transform society even outside of mining itself. Welcome to a seminar on system change in interaction between business and innovation policy.

This web page has been machine translated. If there are any uncertainties, please refer to the Swedish text.

The Swedish mining industry - mining companies and equipment manufacturers - has long been a global powerhouse in the transformation of the mining industry. Sweden has an internationally very prominent innovation system around the mining industry, which today also includes suppliers of innovative digital solutions as well as the prominent Swedish telecom industry. Swedish actors have been given the responsibility of leading very large and ground-breaking demonstration projects, financed under the EU's framework program for research and development.

The development behind this advanced position has been a toss-up between initiatives in business and innovation policy initiatives. Strong industrial entrepreneurship has created the technical conditions. Vinnova's funding of, among other things, R&I agendas, broad collaborative projects and strategic innovation programs has contributed to forming common goal images, to broad mobilization of actors within the innovation system and to good conditions for funding at EU level.

This is a story of change and competitiveness. It carries important lessons for the broader innovation policy and for transformative policy in general. Take the opportunity to hear it from some who were at the center of the development.

The seminar is based on a policy brief produced by Vinnova. Read the policy brief "With a view to the mining of the future".
