Call Advanced digitalization: System-changing initiatives, pre-study project 2025

Purpose and goal

The pre-study aims to plan a collaboration project to enable a 5G-enabled vertiport with network-based positioning, supporting world-leading operations in line with EASA requirements. It brings together key stakeholders, aligns technical requirements and opportunities, and includes cost analysis, business models, and testbed plans for sites such as Norrköping Airport, Sundsvall Midlanda Airport, and Sundsvall Hospital.

Expected effects and result

The pre-study delivers a project plan for 5G-enabled vertiports with network-based positioning in line with EASA. It results in technical requirements, business models, cost analysis, and a demo plan. The project strengthens Sweden’s capacity to develop digital infrastructure for drone traffic, laying the foundation for testbeds and smart infrastructure. It brings together industry, academia, and public authorities to accelerate the development of safe, resilient and cost-efficient air transport

Planned approach and implementation

The feasibility study is divided into three work packages that focus on identifying use cases, technical eligibility requirements, mapping 5G infrastructure, developing business models and financing strategies. The work is carried out in close collaboration between industry, academia, and public actors through workshops and meetings. The aim is to create a robust foundation for an implementation project with 5G-enabled vertiporters and scalable solutions for the air mobility of the future.
