Important results from the project
Since 2012, UU Innovation has granted VFT funds to over 300 unique ideas, with a total of SEK 33 million in invoiced costs. More than 40% of the ideas have led to company formation, and 81% of these companies are still active. The companies have collectively attracted SEK 1.9 billion in private and public capital, generated SEK 0.5 billion in tax revenue, SEK 1.4 billion in turnover and created 373 jobs (2023). IP has been secured in 98 projects and 22% has gone to incubators or accelerators.
Expected long term effects
VFT funds enable verification and risk minimization of ideas in the early phase with the goal of increasing the utilization of knowledge assets generated at universities. We see great value in VFT in the innovation system´s value chain, where early verification of ideas with VFT-funded activities makes them well prepared for continued commercialization but also that it fills a value in validating and accelerating ideas via other paths to utilization and implementation in society.
Approach and implementation
Decisions on VFT activities up to SEK 300,000 were made by a committee with representatives from UU Innovation, UU Invest AB and the business incubator UIC.
Deeptech projects with verification needs additional to what was granted in the regular process, could apply for an additional up to SEK 250,000. A national competence panel with advisors with domain-specific competence from the country´s innovation offices was then assembled for assessment and decision for granting.
