Purpose and goal

SeaQare® is a new antifouling technology from Svenska Aerogel that cuts copper use by up to 90% through controlled release from the porous nanomaterial Quartzene®. The product meets rising environmental demands, has been successfully tested, and is drawing interest from global paint manufacturers. The project aims to scale up and commercialize the solution for a sustainable marine sector, with applications in offshore energy and aquaculture. The technology supports cleaner seas and biodiversity.

Expected effects and result

The project will result in a novel material that enables long-term reduction of copper emissions in marine environments. Svenska Aerogel contributes core expertise in porous materials, controlled release of biocides and industrial upscaling. Expected effects include better conditions for marine life, reduced environmental impact from ship coatings and aquaculture, and strengthened competitiveness for European industry through innovative, sustainable antifouling technology ready for global markets.

Planned approach and implementation

The project focuses on developing and scaling a new antifouling material with reduced copper release, tailored for the EU market. It includes lab work, efficacy testing, and upscaling of a new manufacturing process. New equipment will be implemented and tested. Environmental performance will be assessed through LCA. Communication tools and a market strategy will be developed to meet EU regulatory demands and support collaboration with European industry partners and end users.
