Important results from the project

The purpose was to strengthen the Swedish mining and mineral industry nationally and internationally by taking a unified approach to biodiversity-issues. The goal was to produce a strategic roadmap for how the mining industry should be able to reduce and in the long run completely avoid net losses of biodiversity. The purpose and goal have been achieved since the project resulted in the road map "Mining with Nature: Swedish mining and mineral industry road map for increased biodiversity" and that an industry-wide goal for biodiversity was formulated and adopted.

Expected long term effects

The first industry-specific roadmap for biodiversity has now been launched in Sweden. The industry can gather strength around this and momentum has been created. The roadmap has generated positive attention from interest groups, authorities, and other industrial sectors. Expected effects are that the measures listed in the roadmap are implemented and provide added value for biodiversity. The project is also expected to inspire other industries to address the issue of biodiversity in a similarly structured way.

Approach and implementation

The project began with an analysis of the current situation by a desk study and telephone interviews. Subsequently, the motives of the industry were mapped and the 2030 goal was formulated. Based on this, the roadmap was formulated. The work was carried out in a project group that reported to a steering group. The work was continuously anchored with Svemin´s members through the environment committee. Svemin´s board decided on the goal. A reference group was invited to the project, with over 20 actors from academia, authorities, indigenous peoples, interest groups, and industry.
