Important results from the project

The Swedish Nutrient Platform is now an established platform for cross-sectoral cooperation and knowledge exchange in the area of nutrient recycling. The platform aims to support, facilitate and overcome obstacles to enable a system change where the nutrients in sewage streams are part of a clean cycle in synergy with the global sustainability goals. As of now, the Swedish Nutrient Platform has 14 paying members, including municipal water and sewerage utilities, technology providers, fertilizer producers, institutes and universities.

Expected long term effects

On the Swedish Nutrient Platfrom´s website, www.ri.se/svenskanaringsplattformen, information is found to support actors in obtaining relevant knowledge within sustainable nutrient recovery. You can find a selection of reports, stories and information about actors who work for nutrient recovery and reuse. In a longer term, the platform is expected to contribute to clear and long-term regulations that ensure reuse of nutrients originating from the sewerage, that the return takes place safely and with high quality, and that Sweden reduces its dependence on fertilizer imports.

Approach and implementation

The formation of the Swedish Nutrient Platform began in the summer of 2019. 5 of Sweden´s largest sewage treatment plants united to co-finance the start-up. They have played a crucial role in defining the platform. RISE has coordinated the work in close collaboration with IVL. During the start-up, monthly meetings were held with representatives from the 5 treatment plants. The platform has then grown organically with projects and meetings that have invited and interested more and more actors. There is now a steering committee in place that decides on the platform´s activities and focus.
