Important results from the project
The project compiled information available regarding biogenic carbon flows in Sweden and produced illustrative images that can be communicated to a broad target group. This was the purpose of the project and it has been well met.
Expected long term effects
A better knowledge base of biogenic carbon flows has a clear effect on, for example, calculations of climate impacts of different types of land use such as agriculture, forestry and other uses where plants sequester carbon. Proposed changes where one wants to increase the climate benefit of the growing biomass can be evaluated in more detail with this type of basis and in the long run better decisions can be made.
Approach and implementation
The project was based on available material and statistics on Sweden´s use of biomass. The available information was compiled into an overall picture illustrating Sweden´s total carbon flows and it was presented and discussed with stakeholders and users of biomass. A couple of iterations were needed to make all the flows fit together mathematically. One challenge was that different data sources indicate their wedge flows in different ways. The picture that was developed became well-established.
