Call BioInnovation: Hypothesis testing step 1 - Innovative project with higher risk

Purpose and goal

The project´s overall aim to verify the pilot plant showed promising results with high quality of the biochar and particularly interesting results for the reactor´s ability to handle energy and biomass. Due to problems with deliveries of components to the plant and thermo-mechanical problems, few test trials were carried out. The pilot plant produced coal grades with a carbon fix > 95% with indications of a better yield of used biomass and lower energy consumption compared to commercial plants. Work on the facility continues after the project.

Expected results and effects

The expected pilot plant clearly indicated that it provides a high yield of applied biomass and uses less energy than comparable industrial process for the production of biochar. This was not verified during the project period with full-scale mass and energy measurements, but since no pyrolysis oil was deposited from pyrolysis oil (returned to the solid coal mass), temperature of the vent was low (< 90°C) and few particles, and relatively low temperature of produced biochar ( approx. 200°C). The process also appears to be suitable for versatile biomasses with high moisture content.

Planned approach and implementation

The focus of the project was the construction of the pilot plant and field experiments. However, these were fewer than planned. Delays of parts and electronics were difficult to deal with and unexpected problems arose on the input side. The project had a good distribution of skills for the work efforts and evaluation that were needed. A dynamic collaboration provided a broad understanding of most parts of the project. In a possible continuation project, it may be appropriate to have more parties for a commercial evaluation of a hypothetical business chain.
