Important results from the project
Business development linked to RISE Acreo´s invention of power multiplication using wavelength multiplexing in optical distance measurement systems. The project has interacted with potential customers, developed lab-based experiments that indicate the potential of invention and demonstrated these to stakeholders on a number of occasions. Based on this, the project has concluded that the next step for continued business development should involve the development of a more functional prototype. The project has not reached the goal of doing business based on the invention.
Expected long term effects
The main result is the lesson that a functional prototype is probably necessary for continued business development of the invention. Another result, which may be important, is that all (!) stakeholders the project has met with have confirmed that the idea is unique, there are no competing techniques, and that the invention is potentially useful in distance measurement systems. It is currently too early to say if RISE Acreo can continue to invest and invest in developing a prototype, it is not just a matter of investment but also dependent on being able to put together an effective team.
Approach and implementation
The project had two main parts, 1). Development of demonstrations of the invention´s potential, 2) Contacts with potential stakeholders. Both of these parts were good and necessary. The project´s staff was adequate in such a way that a technical expert was responsible for 1) and that a business developer was responsible for 2). Analysis: The idea / invention is good, still has good potential, but in order to progress, more efforts a factor of magnitude larger are required: Risk capital for prototype development plus a team ready to focus exclusively on the project.
