Important results from the project
We have successfully collected unique data on risk factors for type 2 diabetes from cohorts in Sweden, Ghana (including Ghanaian migrants in Europe), and South Africa, fulfilling the project’s main objective. We identify both important differences and similarities in diabetes development across populations, as well as clear sex-specific differences, particularly regarding potential prevention strategies.
Expected long term effects
We assess that the results of this project can provide a basis for describing population- and sex-specific opportunities to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Approach and implementation
An international network was established and has led to new collaborations between researchers at the participating universities. The project was characterised by close and effective collaboration with regular meetings; however, the work on data transfer and data-sharing agreements took longer than planned. The project is expected to result in several scientific publications.
