Important results from the project
Today, the demand for biofuels exceeds the supply, but it´s not profitable for farmers to digest manure into biogas. The purpose of the project is hence to make it profitable for farmers to digest manure on the farm. The solution is based on a new invention converting biogas into methane hydrates, ´burning ice´, giving an easier, safer and cheaper storage and transportation. One Nm3 of methane hydrates can contain 150 Mm3 biogas and is stable at -18 degrees celcius giving new possibilities compared to storing biogas as LNG or CBG.
Expected long term effects
The project objectives have been met to a large extent. A prototype is now producing methane hydrates, ´ice´ containing biogas´. Installations are planned for further testing in a research environment as well as at a farm as a demo plant.
Approach and implementation
The project is supported by the incubator of Gävle and collaboration is carried out with SLU, JTI, Gävle University, Biogas Öst and expertise from Sandvik AB. A business coach from Gävle incubator acts as project manager and one F3 Project and one SMURF project is performed to support Metahyd with scientific supporting information regarding e.g. studies using methane hydrates compared to conventional methods.
