Important results from the project

The goal of the project was to increase the understanding of the flow of molten metal in the casting tool. More information gives improved casting simulation. The casting process can be optimized towards increased product quality, reduced wear or reduced energy consumption. Simulation calculations and test castings have been carried out. Test tools for filming the melt and temperature measurement in the tool against the melt with fiber sensors have been sketched out but not physically built.

Expected long term effects

In the long term, die casting is expected to grow in importance, especially in the automotive sector. International trends are towards larger products and increased product quality. Measuring temperature in die tools and filming the behavior of the melt are ways to gain the knowledge required to improve the simulation code or just to see that it matches the actual casting process and the properties of the product. Increased cooperation between the project parties has been achieved.

Approach and implementation

The project started with a review of which test tools would be used and how the measurement technologies fiber sensors and camera can be implemented in the tools. The project was delayed by the difficulty that the parties could not agree on the project agreement and by the high cost of rebuilding the test tools. The industrial partner wanted to reduce their in-kind and finally, the long time for rebuilding the test tools that exceeded the project time. Despite that, some results were obtained.
