Important results from the project

The goal of this feasibility study project has been to create a simple and intuitive interplay between driver and a retrofitted Head-Up Display, using cognitively adapted voice interaction. The need to use the mobile phone while driving is eliminated, while essential functionality is made available in a roadworthy manner. Users with previous experience with voice control in cars, finds the conversation logic very satisfactory. It is stated that the solution can completely replace the mobile phone while driving. Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, focus on driving.

Expected long term effects

Intuitive voice interaction is a vital part of Consenz´s virtual driver assistant, Enzo. The concept has been established in a first prototype of Consenz Head-up Display (HUD). The feasibility study has shown very good results regarding Enzo´s ability to handle and understand the driver´s intention. This makes Enzo an easy-to-use and good driver assistant. The project has clearly demonstrated the great potential in a fully voice-controlled, connected HUD. It also shows challenges to address in future projects, e g situational information hierarchies and degree of customization.

Approach and implementation

The feasibility study has been carried out in four steps. First, a theoretical foundation was laid for functionality and flow logic. Relevant hypotheses were formulated. Choice of technology and architecture followed for testing and validation. In parallel, the HUD GUI was developed for good balance between voice and visual input. Finally, internal and external user tests were performed, in lab and car environment. A work that continues. Well-functioning voice technology works democratizing. Run in a retrofit HUD it has good potential to improve traffic safety for many globally.
