Purpose and goal
R&D drive creation of intellectual assets (IAs), intellectual property rights (IPRs) and innovations, in turn driving economic growth and value creation, in turn driving further R&D etc. in what can be called an "innovation spiral". The overall aim of the project is to expand our limited managerial, economic, legal and technical (MELT) knowledge about a) the theoretical and empirical relations between the 5 key factors in the innovation spiral: R&D, IAs and IPRs, innovations, growth and value creation and b) how digital technologies interact with these relations.
Expected effects and result
The expanded knowledge about the nature of the relations in the innovation spiral and how they interact with digital technologies will be useful for innovation and IP policy-making and policy research at macro and micro levels in Sweden and abroad. The interdisciplinary "MELT" knowledge is likely to result in theoretical and empirical contributions with possible impact in various fields like innovation economics, IP law and economics, and management of technology. The project will also provide teaching material and an increased public awareness about innovation and IP issues.
Planned approach and implementation
The project consists of 6 sub-studies: A1. R&D, IP, innovations, growth and social value creation - an international statistical analysis B1. Valuation and value sharing of multiple IPRs and IAs and the consequences for R&D strategies B2. Modelling of IAs, innovations and so-called endogenous recombinant economic growth B3. Patent information analysis C1. Role and design of IPRs for data based industries C2. Development of FRAND based licensing and pricing on IA/IPR markets. The sub-studies are all complementary, related to digital technologies and to the 5 key factors in the innovation spiral.
