Important results from the project
The objective of this project was to develop knowledge and tools to manage storm water in a sustainable way by implementing multi-functional green infrastructure. In this project, we have investigated and developed green stormwater infrastructure in cold climates, developed recommendations for the placement and design of green infrastructure in New Kiruna. This green stormwater infrastructure is part of the entire sewerage system in Kiruna. An integrated model of this system shows the importance of the green infrastructure in a system context.
Expected long term effects
The project has created a basis for the implementation of green infrastructure in our living lab Kiruna by exploring opportunities for green infrastructure in New Kiruna (placement of green infrastructure, modeling of flows, etc.), evaluating the function of green infrastructure in cold climate and, based on this, developing a design and dimensioning of its implementation in New Kiruna - a so-called Green Street Design. Various recommendations for improving the organization on stormwater management in Kiruna and other Swedish municipalities support this implementation.
Approach and implementation
The project has been conducted by combining a various interdisciplinary scientific methods, mostly tied to our Living Labs Kiruna and Zwolle in the Netherlands and Innsbruck in Austria. In Kiruna, in close collaboration with stakeholders, a stormwater plan has been developed which points out locations for green infrastructure. Input from several workshops included in this plan. The implementation of this green Infrastructure is also supported by literature studies, experimental work and modeling. All results have been communicated and discussed with local stakeholders.
