Purpose and goal
The project´s focus is to test chemicals from forest raw materials to replace fossil-based ones, which follows the UN´s objective 13 to combat climate change. The project will evaluate new value chains from forest raw materials, which relate to UN objective 9; sustainable industry, innovations and infrastructure, and then to applications for increased wooden construction, which is described in UN objective 11 on sustainable cities and communities. An increased use of wood material products also supports the UN´s objective 12 on sustainable consumption and production.
Expected effects and result
With the hypothesis testing project, we expect to get a clear answer to the potential of the concept of green chemicals from pyrolysis oil and the possibility of an expanded use of green chemicals. The project will demonstrate a new value chain that will be challenging and at the same time necessary to increase knowledge and experience for the green transition of chemicals. The TRL is expected to develop from level 3 to 5, MRL from 1 to 3, and SRL from 1 to 3.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is carried out in 6 work packages. AP1: Project management and coordination. AP2: Communication and dissemination. AP3: Characterization of pyrolysis oil and choice of upgrading strategy. AP4: Upgrading pyrolysis oil through fractionation. AP5: Pilot products and technical validation. AP6: Market forecasts and sustainability of products.
