Important results from the project

With the aim of optimizing the innovation through technical development and design in combination with market research and dialogue with stakeholders, the activities have resulted in a clear area of application, potential to bring the innovation to market faster and compete in terms of price, where disposable products for drinks that stand out in design and function are identified as the main track. With development of prototypes, companies who wish to distinguish their products through design and environmental benefits are showing an increased interest in further collaboration.

Expected long term effects

The technical development, with optimization of the core material in combination with testing of barrier formulations and application methods, has resulted in a material that is more flexible and formable while maintaining transparency. The additional barriers tested concluded that the existing barrier is most compatible with the starch and provides functional protection for the product category. Prototypes communicating the material´s short lifespan and distinction from conventional disposable products aim to increase interest and understanding of the innovation.

Approach and implementation

The initial phase, including market research and dialogue with stakeholders, created a focus for later parts of the project. It has been valuable for collaborations involving stakeholders in the design process. Followed by the technical work with a focus on testing new barrier solutions and optimization of the inner material has meant a partly protracted process based on challenges around synchronization with barrier manufacturers and material specifications around biodegradability/bio-based content. The work with product development has run throughout the project.
