Important results from the project
This pre-study aimed at assessing the possibility of using biocomposites in windows, if by using bonding between glass and sash one can utilize the strength of glass to minimize the frame dimensions, and to assess the production-related conditions. The study identified appropriate biocomposite types for window constructions as well as possible manufacturing processes for these. The remaining issues to be further studied regarding the properties of biocomposites were also highlighted. New windows concepts using bonding between glass and sash were developed and verified.
Expected long term effects
The study resulted in the identification of suitable biocomposites for window constructions. It was also concluded that further development of biocomposites as material is necessary before an application in window constructions that can be introduced on the market is possible. Different concepts of bonding glass to the sash were also evaluated. The mechanical properties and energy performance were verified and compared with an existing standard solution available on the market. The most interesting concepts were identified as well as necessary adhesive properties.
Approach and implementation
The study had two main subjects to investigate: 1. Is the use of biocomposites as a material in window constructions suitable? 2. Can bonding between glass and sash be used to stabilize the window construction and thereby allow reduced dimensions of the sash? Within the study a workshop was organized where a new window concept was developed in a joint effort. The concept was verified and compared against a standard solution existing on the market. Suitable types of biocomposites were identified through identification of necessary material specifications and verifying calculations.
