Important results from the project
We were able to demonstrate the potential usage of methacrylated collagen for 3D bioprinting of skin and bone models as proof of concept. The complexity of mentioned tissues requires further optimization of bioinks and protocols. Not all the goals were achieved as the consortium has not developed a ready-to-use biofunctionalized collagen-based ink for 3D bioprinting that can be commercialized through CELLINKs channels.
Expected long term effects
At the end of the project, we aimed at creating functional skin and bone tissue 3D models from methacrylated collagen with superior properties compared to the existing models CELLINK customers can make using GelXA and CELLINK bioinks (skin and bone modifications), however this is not the case with the 3D models that we were able to deliver at the end of the project.
Approach and implementation
The benefit of the project is the possibility to continue collaboration on the development of 3D skin and bone models in future and thus partially implement project results, however we should substantially reconsider the source of the biomaterials for the models as the existing ones don’t seem to be reliable enough.
