Evaluation of composite structures with on-demand tailored 3D thermoelastic properties

Reference number
Coordinator RISE SICOMP AB - RISE SICOMP AB, Linköping
Funding from Vinnova SEK 260 820
Project duration July 2018 - February 2020
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Elitkomposit´s project idea was to evaluate and test new ways to make composite structures with desirable 3D properties, which should both be rational to manufacture and have good strength. In this case, the noodle area was selected in a T-profile, an area that is both previously explored and interesting for a range of applications. A rational and innovative solution for manufacturing these noodles has been successfully implemented.

Expected results and effects

In addition to the innovative noodles, several test specimens with reference noodles were manufactured for KTH. KTH has developed a calculation model for T-profiles and now needed to verify the model with testing of noodles with known properties rather than optimized. The calculation model can then be used to develop and analyze T-profiles.

Planned approach and implementation

Production of T-profiles and preparation of test specimens has been done by Elitkomposit. Test fixtures have been borrowed from Saab and KTH. RISE has studied "State of the art" in the field, defined the test and been project manager. The project has given increased understanding of the noodle area and enables future improvements for complex composite structures.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
