Important results from the project
The goal was to develop reagents to lyse cells in cow´s milk and measure ATP with an online instrument during milking. Each measurement is calibrated with an ATP standard.
Expected long term effects
A reagent kit for determining ATP in cow´s milk with an online instrument in the barn. This kit is intended to be used to diagnose udder inflammation, which determines if a dairy farmer goes with profit or loss. The technology has attracted great interest among manufacturers of milking robots. Sales will start during the current year.
Approach and implementation
Reagents for ATP determination contains luciferase and D-luciferin. Both substances are degraded at the temperatures that can occur in a barn. Consequently, stabilizers must be added. We have worked with several types and many combinations. In the end, we found an optimized blend. Then we found out that one of the stabilizers is harmful to the aquatic environment and must not be used after 2021-01-04. We have now found a replacement, but some experiments must be repeated.
