Important results from the project
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), biochar systems have a global potential to annually remove around 2.6 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. As obstacles to scaling up biochar systems, the IPCC highlights uncertainty regarding access to sustainable biomass, lack of large-scale production solutions and high production costs, especially for small-scale solutions. The project has aimed to identify solutions that can handle the limitations. The goal was achieved, and Reverse Carbon has a concept ready to offer the market carbon removal credits.
Expected long term effects
A feasible scalable and sustainable value chain for a biochar system has been identified. A partnership with a local partner has been formalized. The identified system gives us good conditions for structuring a financing solution. Reverse Carbon has profiled itself successfully on the market and the brand has been strengthened. We now have good conditions to mobilize financing to be able to build our first biochar system. Sales channels for Reverse Carbon carbon removal credits have been prepared.
Approach and implementation
The core of the project consisted of three virtual pilot projects that were carried out. Three different cases, in different regions and with different technical conditions, were studied based on real data. Local data was collected through contacts with local industries (including site visit). Technical solutions from a large number of suppliers of technology for biochar production were analyzed. A technically and economically attractive system configuration was identified.
