Important results from the project

The project aimed to stimulate the construction sector´s transformation towards circular business ecosystems (CBE) by having key actors jointly identify and test ways to catalyze change with a practical, system-focused design-driven approach. Insights were created on CBE formation, in particular the importance of the fuzzy front-end phase where actors build trusting relationships and knowledge through joint exploration and experimentation; the very basis for later stages of CBE formation.

Expected long term effects

Several enablers for early-stage CBE formation were identified: an emergent process allowing focus shifts, trusting relationships, neutral and multidisciplinary facilitation, internal catalysts and their strategic choice of participants for maximized impact. Participants’ experiences of a collaborative process in an uncertain context contribute to system transformation that often rests on individuals. The results are disseminated through an academic article and handbook for circular pioneers.

Approach and implementation

During 11 customized, interactive workshops, participants explored obstacles and solutions related to e.g. roles, material flows, standards and logistics solutions. New CBEs involve shifts in roles, power and profit, creating tensions. The focus was on relations and meeting the parties´ different starting points and needs. Based on system design, several tools were developed for process management and co-creation. A live pilot project was initiated to prototype new ways of working and roles.
