Important results from the project
** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** Bättre Design intends to use its expertise in 3D printing in metal to create more innovative and environmentally friendly products. This project aimed to reduce the waste of water and energy in terms of heated water at sinks and other areas such as for coffee machines. The support from Vinnova has helped to secure patenting opportunities as well as develop competence and create relevant documents to verify the feasibility of 3D-printed water heaters and their potential environmental savings in the guise of water-heating bathroom faucets.
Expected long term effects
The support has resulted in a PCT proposal at PRV that extends the opportunity to develop and evaluate the technology before deciding where and how patent applications should be applied globally. Through its own and external resources, the company has gathered data that proves that a water heating faucet would be more environmentally friendly and economical than installing HVAC systems in buildings. Finally, an LCA analysis has been made of the 3D printed component to guide how design and material selection can be improved to reduce the operational footprint of the product.
Approach and implementation
Zacco made the Swedish patent application, after which a PCT proposal with them happened smoothly. Improving the performance of the concept was more iterative and difficult. Due to the fact that 3D printing in metal for water heating is a new area, both own reflection, customer insights and external professional help were required to take important steps forward. All parts were fulfilled thanks to the Vinnova support but also through infrastructure checks which provided extra funds for expert advice on performance and user scenario. Students were able to complete the LCA.
