Important results from the project
The purpose of the project is to make the status quo with respect to women in our profession more prominent. These facts should serve as a benchmark and encourage changes to climb the rankings as well as facilitate new research that uses data. We managed to deliver i) the website tracking the proportion of women per position in finance departments around the world over time, ii) the organization of the event aimed at the financial industry, 6 Dec. 2022 title: “Gender and Promotion Gaps in the Finance Industry” and iii) we produced a short film "Sidelined in Science" shown at o.a. conferences.
Expected long term effects
We made this film Sidelined in Science in an effort to move the discussion away from emotion and instead create a more fact-based conversation. The goal is to show this film to the faculty as a starting point for a discussion and hopefully a constructive conversation about potential improvements. The film has been shown as the keynote event at the Midwestern Finance Association conference in Chicago and will be shown in Warsaw in June 2023. We plan to organize a workshop this autumn with the heads of finance departments in Europe and their respective deans.
Approach and implementation
We started by collecting the 2021 data in collaboration with Guido Friebel and his team. Then we have developed a website that visualizes the collected data. We have organized an event; oriented towards the financial industry “Gender and Promotion Gaps in the Finance Industry” Denna day brought together academics, representatives from industry, and decision-makers to discuss what we can do to promote women to higher positions. We also developed a short film ´Sidelined in Science´ about the science behind the barriers women researchers in financial economics face.
