Project duration December 2021 - December 2024
Status Completed
Venture Innovations for a sustainable mobility system - individual applications

Important results from the project

The project fulfilled the goal of compiling research on the effects of measures in the street space and producing a web-based tool for urban and traffic planners, Streetmeter. The tool is based on knowledge of the impact of street design on social, economic and environmental values. The tool also includes an easily accessible knowledge compilation that can be used as support in street design. The project´s reference group has tested the tool and contributed to its improvement.

Expected long term effects

Streetmeter is expected to become widespread and change street planning by making visible more values than accessibility for motor traffic. The tool can contribute to a shift from forecast-driven to objective-driven municipal planning and support sustainable objective such as reduced car traffic, better health, higher road safety, stronger social cohesion and increased equality. By making alternative values visible, it can strengthen climate adaptation, air quality, security and urban life.

Approach and implementation

The project has been carried out by Spacescape and RISE together with four municipal project partners: Umeå, Eskilstuna, Malmö and Stockholm. A larger group of reference persons has also been involved. The project has included an extensive review of research and methods for measuring the effects of different designs. The work has also included workshops and tests. The result has been integrated into a web tool and compiled into a report that can be used as support in street design
