Important results from the project
The goal of the project has been to further develop a non-fossil based material for encapsulation of for instance OLEDs and solar cells. Within the framework of the project EXEGER has manufactured approximately 100 demonstrators of various size and with different encapsulants. The material has been relatively brittle and aging tests has shown difficulties regarding the encapsulation effect and also some coloring has occurred. There are promising results regarding the materials characteristics but the brittleness makes it not ready for the application.
Expected long term effects
Expected effects from this project is an awareness that it is possible to use CNF in this type of application, even if there currently is a need for more optimization work. The results regarding water transmission are extremely promising and this bio-based material has great potential for the future.
Approach and implementation
One project partner made CNF in their labs and pilot plant, this material was coated with different types of organic and inorganic coatings by other project partners and the material was subsequently integrated in solar cells. The next step was aging tests, both focusing on performance but also on appearance, this according to standard methods for solar cells and encapsulation material.
