Important results from the project

Goals were largely achieved. The possibility of timber construction was assessed for inpatient wards, ICU and operation theatres, not X-ray/lab. Fire/noise regulations not obstacles, but difficulties rise due to added regional requirements regarding construction and generality. Studying individual wards resulted in limited climate impact results. The wood and hospital construction sectors were introduced increasing knowledge of opportunities and RDI needs. Increased capacity of building systems.

Expected long term effects

Hope for increased dialogue for the use of wood in regional construction. Involvement of MSB and PTS needed to develop more diversified requirements for different operations. Develop new tools and methods for planning and optimizing operations and construction, would contribute to a more cost-effective hospitals in general. Strengthened competitiveness of suppliers and designers through increased knowledge of upcoming EU requirement. Need for investments in R&D has been made visible.

Approach and implementation

Broad stakeholder participation important: clients, architects, designers, contractors, frame suppliers, and researchers. Joint process with seminars/ws created consensus and good collaboration. Compilation of requirements for incl. operations that affect wood construction. Assessment of the ability of frame systems to meet requirements. Fictitious design of a frame in wood for incl. operations. Popular science report aimed at clients/architects. Competition makes collaboration difficult.
