SI traceable electrometry using Rydberg atoms

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - RISE
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 239 720
Project duration June 2026 - June 2028
Status Ongoing

Purpose and goal

The project aims to establish a new SI-traceable method for measuring electric fields at RISE based on quantum sensors with Rydberg atoms. The goal is to develop and evaluate an experimental method for absolute measurement of electric fields. The results will be compared with established methods to assess the potential of the technology for future metrological applications and strengthen expertise in quantum-based electrometry.

Expected effects and result

Rydberg atom electrometry is established as a new measurement capacity at RISE and enables independent evaluation of today´s calibration methods for electric fields, especially for high-frequency measurements above 100 GHz. The results strengthen national expertise in quantum metrology and can ultimately contribute to more reliable measurements for 5G/6G, radar and millimeter-wave systems, as well as create conditions for future portable sensors and European metrology cooperation.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will be implemented in 2026–2028 in four work packages that will gradually establish Rydberg atom electrometry at RISE. The work includes development of laser systems and atomic spectroscopy, demonstration of absolute electric field measurement through Autler–Townes splitting, and comparisons with established methods. The project uses existing laboratory infrastructure and builds a reusable platform for future quantum-based metrology.
