Important results from the project

The goal of the project was to develop a business model to manufacture and sell our technology in South Africa. The outcome was a two reports: DIRECT URINE CAPTURE FOR FERTILIZER USE in South Africa and URINE DRYING BUSINESS CASE for Sanitation360 which identified the potential for urine recycling and the bottle-necks. The main outcome was finding a solution for off-grid urine-treatment. The concept is currently being designed and built for initial testing in Sweden during summer 2022. Additionally, we have established partnerships for implementation projects in South Africa.

Expected long term effects

The goal, to develop a business model to manufacture and sell our technology in South Africa. With the completion of the five activities, we have solved our main bottle-neck (energy consumption) and have signed four non-disclosure agreements and discussions/negotiations for manufacturing and pilot projects in South Africa have been initiated.

Approach and implementation

We had five activities: (1) Business model mapping; (2) Business plan development and evaluation; (3) Tech Adaptation for South African Production; (4) Tech Transfer; and (5) Traveling to Cape Town to meet potential partners. For Activities 1 and 2, we partnered with the WASH R&D Center at University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Sustainable Development Specialist in South Africa. For Activities (3), (4) and (5), we partnered with Business Sweden, and three companies manufacturing and implementing low-tech service solutions in South Africa.
