Important results from the project

Yes, we have built on previous knowledge of wastewater reuse by identifying suitable application areas in the region, and particularly for Syvab, SVOA, and Käppala. We have mapped key stakeholders, legal barriers, existing experiences, and potential future applications. Several measures have already been implemented, including increased use of treated water. The project has inspired more actors to engage, and one WWTP has submitted a permit application and begun developing business models.

Expected long term effects

In the long term, we foresee that all participating actors will replace all potable water that can technically be substituted with reclaimed water in their own operations. We also expect that the relevant municipalities and water utilities will actively work to integrate the use of reclaimed water as a natural part of their operations. Furthermore, these actors are prepared to take a leading role in this transition.

Approach and implementation

Our idea to identify relevant stakeholders through open workshops and direct contact proved difficult, as water reuse was a new concept for many, and internal decision-making required significant time. Our planned workshops had to be postponed. On the other hand, we were able to conduct internal workshops earlier and more extensively than planned, as more departments showed interest. Collaboration between stakeholders worked very well.
