Purpose and goal

Our project focuses on identifying, describing and communicating the variation of qualitative values and alternative value chains in existing buildings in contrast to today´s dominant business models that prioritize demolition and new construction over renovation, conversion and management. The goal is to investigate possible ways to promote a shift in the construction and real estate industry towards more management and conversion.

Expected effects and result

By considering the building from a holistic and longitudinal perspective and as the amount of material, social, cultural, ecological and economic resources invested in it during its lifetime, the project will broaden the view of the concept of value and present a proposal for a model for alternative value production. As a policy instrument, the model can be inscribed as an element in a transformation policy, in directives, in care, maintenance and management plans and other action plans.

Planned approach and implementation

During phase 1, the Administration Building in Umeås Universitets Campus is inventoried and analyzed to contextualize it in both space and time. The material that is generated is analyzed and organized in a matrix to identify value chains and value producers with an educational overview. During phase 2, the model for alternative value production is developed. Based on the spatial, structural, technical, artistic, and site-specific values, we create a design proposal and a management strategy.
