prGO for power grid components

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 200 000
Project duration April 2024 - April 2026
Status Ongoing
Venture Strategic innovation program SIO Grafen
Call Collaboration on commercial applications with graphene (autumn 2023)

Purpose and goal

The purpose of this project is to make partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO) ready for product qualification used in sensors/coatings for production of high voltage equipment such as power transformers. The goal of prGO project is to investigate prGO for monitoring of moisture levels in transformer materials, its stability in relevant operating and measurement conditions; investigation of controlled reduction techniques of graphene oxide. Additionally, establish a quality assured materials supply chain, sensor fabrication process to enable for industrial applications.

Expected effects and result

The expected project results will enhance competence and knowledge of partners in developing controlled, reproducible and reliable methods of obtaining and characterizing partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO). prGO will enable increase the reliability of critical components in the power grid, reduce the cost of manufacturing and quality assurance of grid components. This, in turn, strengthen a strategically important industrial technology field. The power grid is also a prerequisite for the increased electrification needed for a lower climate impact of the society.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is divided into 6 work packages. RISE will co-ordinate project and serve as scientific leader. Grafrene AB will perform market survey for reliable Graphene oxide(GO) suppliers, source GO, perform quality control & size fractionation of GO. RISE will investigate partial reduction techniques and state of reduction (SoR) of prGO along with measurements related to stability of prGO. Sensors will be fabricated using different printing techniques and will be tested in industrially relevant setup/conditions of high voltage transformers testing labs at Hitachi Energy.
