New concept for efficient combined tranportation

Purpose and goal

The aim of the project is to prepare a full-scale system demonstration of a new concept for combined transports with horizontal transshipments of semi-trailers, "Assisted RoRo Transshipments”. The objectives of the project are - to develop a suitable railway wagon configuration, - to create a virtual system demonstration, and - to prepare a project plan for implementing a full-scale system demonstration.

Expected effects and result

Implementation of the system is expected to lead to faster electrification of long-distance transportation at lower energy consumption. The preparatory project is expected to provide a good basis for a full-scale demonstrator in a combined transport shuttle with - an evaluated first virtual demonstration, - reduced critical technical uncertainties related to railway wagon configurations, and - an implementation plan, including proposed activities, geographical locations and actors.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is implemented in three work packages: WP 1 - Virtual system demonstration; WP2 - Preparation of railway wagon; and WP 3 - Planning and preparation for system demonstrator. In WP 1 an animated virtual demonstrator is developed through animation. In WP 2 a basic railway wagon configuration is developed and decide. A first demonstrating model of the wagon is created. In WP 3 local conditions are investigated, after which an updated project plan is created.
