Important results from the project

In the project, we have optimized and analyzed the development of a 3D printed injection molding tool for mobile phone holders. The project has specifically analyzed methods for optimizing the print and surface properties of the tool, through improvements in both the material composition and various finishing techniques. We have been able to deliver a final prototype tool to a customer who meets their requirements for the tool as well as surface properties of the injection molded part.

Expected long term effects

The original material formulation proved to require more development to cope with the high temperatures and forces during the injection molding process. The final material formulation developed during the project demonstrated a sufficiently high resistance to the required temperatures as well as mechanical stresses. In addition, this composition enabled the surface of the mold cavity to be polished and finished to such a level that they corresponded to comparable tools made of aluminum.

Approach and implementation

The project was performed iteratively based on the customer´s requirements specifications, with follow-up material formulations and 3D prints as well as post-processing methods. The evaluation of the results has taken place both through direct analysis of the material, the tools produced, the tool´s performance in operation, and analysis of the injection molded parts. The evaluation of the finished details is largely done with the help of the visual appearance, supported by mechanical analyzes.
