Purpose and goal

The project is a socio-technical study of the laboratory analysis work in the steel industry. The aim is to generate knowledge about how to improve the interaction between people, technology and organisation in a more automated and sustainable industry. Based on mapping and case studies, methods are developed to create attractive and safe work environment for laboratory staff and better integrate with technological innovation, e.g. digital traceability, automated sample handling and AI support.

Expected effects and result

The project will provide more knowledge about work, work environment and technology implementation in the steel industry´s laboratories, an often overlooked but critical part of the industry. The project also contributes to efficiency, quality, sustainability and resilience by creating opportunities to improve the sociotechnical systems and working conditions of laboratory staff by ensuring that new technologies are developed and implemented in an inclusive and sustainable way.

Planned approach and implementation

The project includes project conferences, literature overviews, mapping and case studies with current situation analyses, co-creation and development of solutions in close dialogue with staff at the laboratories. The focus is on sample logistics, information flows and work environment at laboratories for both chemical analyses and mechanical testing. The project is based on close collaboration between LTU, SSAB Oxelösund, SSAB Borlänge, Outokumpu Avesta, Sandberg Analytical and Jernkontoret.
