Important results from the project

The project’s objective — to verify a scalable solution for the delivery of chilled food products within a validated, unbroken cold chain adapted to the e-commerce distribution process to the end customer — has been achieved through validated subcomponents and two demonstrators integrated into regular daily operations within DAGAB’s logistics chain. These demonstrators include Middagsfrid’s recipe-based meal kit deliveries and foodora’s production using delivery robots with meal kits.

Expected long term effects

The long-term impact is that the solution may contribute to the electrification of vehicles used for refrigerated transport with a verified cold chain, without the need for additional energy input during transport and without requiring larger vehicle batteries for cooling units which would otherwise have a major impact on vehicle investment costs, range, and thus operational profitability. Furthermore, the solution has potential to enhance delivery quality and support circular delivery flows.

Approach and implementation

Development of a solution in which the cartons are monitored with respect to temperature and humidity. Temperature monitoring using a sensor platform ensures an unbroken cold chain through an easily manageable solution for personnel in the food and transport sectors. A logging system tracks the position of the cooling boxes and automatically monitors their lifespan and the number of cycles they can be used before being sent for recycling. The customer experience was evaluated through interviews.
