Important results from the project

The CO2 target degree is not achieved but resulted in plans of pilot collaborations, climate-smart gabions with demolition concrete. The IoT technology data collection for circular economy reduces transport and natural resource extraction. Opens opportunities for carbon credits, enhancing sustainability in the construction industry. Sparked leading industry interest in demolition concrete´s potential to reduce carbon footprints, measure and optimize carbonization, recycling, and valorization.

Expected long term effects

Data on demolition concrete, such as traceability, origin, composition, and quality, is unstructured and needs to be more systematically to enable large-scale utilization. Stakeholders show interest in pilot projects to validate CO2 uptake in demolition concrete and develop carbonization methods to reduce the carbon footprint, create carbon credits with third-party validation, and optimize residual fractions to enhance both sustainability and economic viability in construction projects.

Approach and implementation

Site visits to NCC, Skanska, and Swerock were conducted, along with the collection of three demolition concrete samples. A measurement station was built to measure CO2 uptake via mass transfer (weight) using a connected IoT scale, with dry matter control via a laboratory scale. In-depth meetings were held with RISE and experts in CO2 measurement. The screening revealed unstructured data on demolition concrete in the construction sector. Extreme weather caused delays and additional work.
