Graphene Camouflage with Advanced Weight and Functional Properties (G-CAM)

Reference number
Coordinator Saab Barracuda AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 568 284
Project duration March 2022 - October 2024
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation program SIO Grafen
Call SIO Grafen: Collaboration on commercial applications with graphene - autumn 2021

Important results from the project

The aim was to manufacture and demonstrate the performance of full-scale prototype of the camouflage with graphene coating. It has been reached and realized, passing the planned stages of development of small-scale prototype, respective characterization and industrialization of the technology to large-scale manufacturing. The final prototype of full-scale camouflage has demonstrated the required performance at approx. 20% lower weight and improved strength and fire-resistant properties.

Expected long term effects

The project has demonstrated graphene ability to improve significantly the critical characteristics of the modern high-tech camouflage products. The data generated may be further used for implementation of graphene in other products, particularly fibres/textiles based. Important effect of this project is that it is proven that the required performance of the products can be realized at less cost of raw materials and polymers, paving the way to more sustainable manufacturing and resources use.

Approach and implementation

The project was performed by planned stages, with some outpacing. The partners were performing the tasks with good coherence and feedback to each other. All the planned activities were executed (small scale prototype, characterization and upscaling the coating to industrial scale). The project has reached performance levels exceeding its initial expectations. The results of the project are creating a solid basis for further commercialization and new common product launch.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
