Important results from the project

The project yielded both planned and unexpected results. The goal of mapping imported products and replacing these with locally grown crops is achieved and shows several promising development paths and new business areas. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) from IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet AB makes it possible to compare our climate footprint with imported crops and confirms that regrown plants significantly reduce resource use. We are implementing more regrowing and establishing new partnerships with local food companies for product development and sales.

Expected long term effects

The project shows great potential for plant regrowth in reducing overall climate footprint while increasing growth and quality, thereby increasing farm income. Through optimised production schedules, reuse of input material and development of circular energy and heating solutions, CO₂e emissions can be reduced simultaneously. New collaborations, products and business areas such as mushroom cultivation on selfmade substrate contribute to increased circularity and reduced imports of raw materials.

Approach and implementation

The project first surveyed imported crops among customers and companies that import food to see which of these could be replaced by local crops. In a second phase, different varieties were test-grown and later launched commercially through sales to various kitchens, restaurants and stores. In the final phase, a life cycle analysis of our crops was carried out, which can now be compared with imported crops. Information campaigns have been carried out to share results and knowledge publicly.
