Purpose and goal

The aim is to investigate the conditions for how vehicle-generated data can be combined with road infrastructure-related information to enable objective, data-driven and system-wide analyses of the transport infrastructure. The study also aims to investigate how such analyses can contribute to the development of new effect relationships and thereby create conditions for the modernization of regulations and requirements and working methods for planning, designing and maintaining infrastructure.

Expected effects and result

The project will provide a knowledge base that describes how data-driven system analyses can be carried out and used to develop and update today´s effect relationships. Through more objective and reality-based analyses, the conditions are created to modernize existing regulations and requirements in the infrastructure sector. This can enable faster implementation of innovations and contribute to more sustainable, efficient and traffic-safe planning, design and management of the infrastructure.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is implemented in 4 stages. First, available data sources are mapped and analyzed, such as vehicle data (speed, acceleration, braking, vibrations and friction) and infrastructure data on maintenance, design, accidents and costs. Data quality and legal and organizational conditions for data sharing are assessed. Then, methods are developed to integrate and analyze data, including AI-based tools to identify corelation between road condition, traffic, safety, emissions and costs.
