Important results from the project

The project has carried out a feasibility study, economic analysis and project planning for the electrification of the port area using new renewable electricity production in combination with battery storage solutions. An analysis of the electricity demand in the port for the future shift of all port machinery from diesel to battery operation and the implementation of vehicle and ship charging is performed. Furthermore, the project has investigated the need for fossil-free fuels for boat traffic that goes via the port and developed plans for the implementation of fossil-free fuels.

Expected long term effects

Changing the machine fleet to electric is not profitable under the current price situation due to high investment costs and relatively low diesel prices. An investment in solar production to supply the port, on the other hand, is profitable with a payback period of 13 years. The electricity grid also needs to be reinforced with an additional cost of approximately 10 MSEK. The study has investigated the profitability of local methanol production for fossil-free fuel. As electricity price is the driving force, it would be more advantageous to place it in electricity zone S1 or S2 instead.

Approach and implementation

The electricity need for the transformation of the port has been identified by going through the machine park and usage times as well as possible charging times. With the help of electricity grid analyses, capacity reinforcement needs have been identified. The same analyzes have been carried out to assess the benefit of solar and battery investments. A techno-economic analysis has been carried out to assess profitability. Furthermore, a methanol production plant has been designed for port needs and techno-economic studies have been carried out to assess its viability.
