Purpose and goal
The European electronics industry urgently needs more neutron irradiation facilities, as the only current one (ISIS in UK) is fully booked until after 2027. ESS facility in Sweden, equipped with the world’s most powerful neutron beam, offers a promising solution. The proposed project aims to develop an irradiation beamline at ESS, ECHIR, by preparing a business case, technical design, and radiation dose simulations, thus positioning Sweden as a global leader in electronics irradiation.
Expected effects and result
The expected outcomes include a conceptual design for the irradiation facility along with associated radiation protection measures, as well as detailed Monte Carlo simulations providing a basis for assessing radiation shielding and dose rates within ECHIR. Through collaboration with industry partners, the Proposal is expected to be of high quality and well aligned with both research and practical needs, thereby enhancing the feasibility of implementation and future application.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is divided into two components. The first involves developing a scientific plan in close collaboration with leading industrial stakeholders in Europe, who are the primary users of the facility. The second focuses on technical implementation, where an experienced design engineer will lead the technical study, supported by a researcher conducting particle transport simulations. These simulations will be used to calculate radiation doses for personnel working within the facility.
