Important results from the project
The project aims at developing new technologies and materials for thermal interface material by exploring systems such as nano- BN fiber and nano- polymer infiltrated by metal. The technology will be applied in a demonstrator to demonstrate the improved performance of the new material. The research results fulfill the objective of the project with successful material processing and outstanding thermal performance in the demonstrator. The material developed in the project will be commercialized and introduced into the market within 1-3 years.
Expected long term effects
High thermal conductivity is achieved for both BN and polymer infiltrated metal composites. The introduction of polymer fiber enhances the tensile strength and reliability of the composite material. For the demonstrator, the overall thermal resistance for the NanoTIM is much less than the reference material. This indicates that that NanoTIM is far superior to the commercial TIM material in the market. SHT enhances the competence on thermal management and creates the job opportunity. Both SHT and Chalmers have published joint papers in international journals and conferences.
Approach and implementation
The concept of nanofiber-metal based composites as thermal interface material is unique. There is no such product in market at the moment. We are going to do more profound market survey and to find the right end user for NanoTIM´s application. At the same we will continue the cooperation work with our industry partner with more tests in order to improve the quality of the material and make adjustment for their application. A go-to-market strategy will be prepared for production-line set up, manufacturing and commercialization.
